But a trade means that Jimmy G's contract (i.e., $25M next season) is still in effect, right?. Why would anyone pay that? You can sign him in open market, after release, for a LOT less.
I happen to think Jimmy G, when healthy, is a very good QB; however, I would not pay the guy $25M next season. No way. I figure Jimmy will sign up as some team's backup QB for a year at $5-$7M, and then we'll see. If starter gets injured our otherwise is out, Jimmy may shine (again, assuming good health). Or, he could hold a clip board all year and make very good coin for such work.
I see a release by 'Niners; no trade, unless there is a way to re-work the K for new team as part of that trade (no clue if that's possible or plausible).
