I assume that as part of any deal, there would be a contract extension/renegotiation.

The reason to trade, as opposed to wait for free agency, is if you are concerned that there will be other suitors. Of course, that doesn’t seem likely, but as a potential destination, you’d have to at least Susa out the landscape.

Release and sign by another team at a discount with heavy incentives seems the most likely, no?
