Men's VB was interesting. None of the top three ranked teams won their respective league championships -- Long Beach State (19-4), Penn State (23-4) and UCLA (21-3), and Penn State was the odd team out. Overall #1 ranked team Long Beach State retained their #1 seed for the NCAA championships. They play the winner of UCLA and Pepperdine (16-9); those are the three teams in the upper bracket.
In the lower bracket, Princeton (15-12) had upset Penn State, and they have the #6 seed against #7 North Greenville (25-3), a college I had literally never heard of and their five Puerto Rican starters. In the Junior Olympics, the Puerto Rican teams routinely win the gold medals at the age 12, 13 and 14 levels, and they have a number of good players who go on to play at the collegiate level. The winner of the Princeton-North Greenville play-in game plays against #2 overall seed, Ball State (21-3).
Games are from May 1 to May 9 at Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA campus.
Stanford finished 14-14 this year. If they'd managed to keep Jaylen Jasper, they'd probably have won around 20 and would have beaten Pepperdine, who was the year 5 recipient of Jasper's services -- he transferred from Stanford to Pepperdine...although he had nine errors in the match.
