To me an appropriate penalty would be Brooks suspended as long as Payton is out. Nothing inadvertent about what he did. If Payton's career is over, that's pretty rough for Brooks isn't it? Yeah, that's a little harsh. Should be suspended for the series, which has the effect of making Memphis better.
The Grizzlies aren't my cup of tea as a team, but I really, really want to visit Memphis someday. I'll bring an apostrophe, "r" and "e" with me.
How about a compromise on the "out as long as the injured guy is out" concept? It's now being reported that Gary Payton II will be out 3 weeks. So I'm thinking one game suspension for every week the player injured by unacceptable on-court action is out. In this case, it would be a 3 game suspension. That would take Brooks out of both games in SF and the pivotal Game 5 in Memphis. Seems equitable to me.
One thing I don't like is the notion that Brooks "effectively" served a one game suspension already because his foul happened so early in the game. There should not be some sort of incentive for reckless behavior if you do it right when the game starts!
