As long as the Niners release Garoppolo after the injury guarantee release date and before September cut down day, they only owe him $1.4M.
It just wouldn't be a good dynamic to have Garoppolo on the Niners roster with Lance as the guy earmarked to start. The potential for a divided locker room would be too big, so he won't be playing for the Niners.
