I didn't know what horse was coming up fast, but I could see he was going to overtake the leaders when he was 20 lengths back. They were hitting the wall and he was accelerating. The jockey was riding him hard, like he was being chased by a fire breathing dragon. When the track announcer finally noticed and called his name, I literally jumped out of my chair. Phenomenal run for the roses.
Go back and watch the replay of the full race. Rich Strike starts on the far outside and initially runs toward to the rail and tucks in behind the entire field. Then he slowly starts picking off horses one by one. What a fantastic run and considering all the extra effort expended to get to the front, even more astonishing. This is one of my all-time favorite races.
