That tweet was dated April 11.  Isn't it interesting that as much as this group is involved with MBB, no one had any inkling for a month?

Clearly, Stanford didn't announce it.  No mention of a search for a new Oscar da Silva Associate Head Men's Basketball coach.
Coach Cohen's page is gone from the GoStanford.com site for 2021-2022 (but is there for 2020-2021).


Regarding Adam Cohen and any ties to the whole scandal:

Vandemoer also recounts how shortly after meeting Singer, he received a voicemail from Adam Cohen, Stanford men's basketball assistant coach, personally vouching for Singer.
"Just want you to know I've worked with Rick. He's a guy you can trust. Let me know if you want to talk about him some more," Cohen said, according to Vandemoer.
(In an email to the San Francisco Chronicle, a Stanford spokesperson said the university did not find any evidence that the coach had vouched for Singer, and Cohen denies doing so.)

That Stanford spokesperson email to the SF Chronicle says in part

“Coach Cohen introduced Singer to Vandemoer through a polite email. The external review investigated this issue and did not find any evidence that the coach had vouched for Singer and Cohen denies doing so.”

In another article, apparently originally in the NY Times (but I don't have access), reprinted in an Indian paper:

In a Nov. 4, 2016, email that Vandemoer provided to The New York Times, Cohen wrote: “I wanted to touch base with you about Rick Singer and the possibility of the walk-on he has talked with you about. Are you free at all today for a quick conversation?”

Vandemoer answered about 40 minutes later, saying that he was traveling to Texas for a regatta but that he had reached out to an athletic department fundraising administrator to help work on it.

Cohen replied: “Thanks, John. Appreciate you getting back to me.”

Mostofi said on Sunday night that Cohen had been introduced to Singer by someone who was not employed at Stanford, although she did not immediately specify who the person was or whether he or she had another connection to the university. Cohen did not recall endorsing Singer or a sailing recruit with Vandemoer, Mostofi said in an email.

Cohen, who was hired by Stanford seven months before he contacted Vandemoer about Singer, played down his relationship with Singer — “I’ll just say it’s not a relationship that is a deep relationship of any kind” — and would not say how they met.

“We were not involved,” Cohen said, referring to the basketball program. He declined to answer further questions, adding, “I’m not allowed to say anything about anything.”

The question I would ask is why did Cohen contact Vandemoer about the "walk-on" at all?  That reason isn't mentioned.  What was his purpose to ask for a "quick conversation"?  Has Cohen or other MBB coaches ever contacted one of the minor sport coaches about walk-ons before or since?

There was apparently a copy of the email, but was there evidence that a call was made by Cohen in which he might have left a voicemail? Or is there evidence he didn't, or is there simply no evidence to say one way or the other.  Stanford leaves it as "no evidence that the coach had vouched for Singer" versus "no evidence of a voicemail by Cohen to Vandemoer", leaving it as a former employee's word against a (then) current employee.  I see little reason for Vandemoer to misrepresent the truth now.   It's different for Cohen.   Could the Feds require Singer to clarify what his contact was to Cohen in regard to this matter?  (Would his lawyer have tried to make that request a condition of agreeing to plead guilty?)
