Ok. I'm going to go with Fields and Keck as walk-ons. (Really non-scholarship and not "walk-ons," but you understand.) This would explain how the staff is getting the roster down to 85. In both cases, it makes sense. As many (including me) thought at first, Fields was admitted to Stanford on graduate academic scholarship before he made (official) contact with the football team, so he is a non-recruited player, and it was just a brobdingnagian bonus that he decided he'd play some football on the side. :) And, as for Keck, I'll bet he tried the transfer protocol because he was told that he did not have a scholie for this year. And when he did not receive any offers from other schools, or perhaps no offers to his liking, he elected to return to Stanford, either on his own dime or he received an academic scholarship as well (it is not unusual to get at least partial academic scholarships to many of the grad programs).
Anyway, both of those scenarios seem right to me.
