I'm sure Coach Ray is deeply disappointed with this result, but if you look at the body of work this year it shouldn't be completely surprising. There just hasn't been consistent enough play from the top three (Brown, Thorbjornsen, Vilips) and they've had minimal support from the rest of the roster. There is a talent gap between Stanford and the top teams in the country, and it looks to get larger next year with both incoming freshmen ranked outside the top 500 and at least two players leaving (Shimp & Menon, possibly Ng & Tuleubayev as well).
Agreed, the a lot was expected of the top 3 but the fact is they haven't played well on anywhere near a consistent basis. I expected guys with their rep would play at least a couple of decent rounds on this course, I don't think we ever broke par. Next year doesn't look all that good unless they make some major improvements over the summer. 90 holes of golf and 3, just 3 birdies total. You can't win playing that kind of golf. We were the worst team on the par 3 holes and only 2 from worst on the par 5's. Just plain lousy golf today.
