Kocurek said some really nice things about Kinlaw yesterday that painted the picture of a guy who really wants it. He raved about his work ethic and his body. They are now starting to ramp up his snaps, targeting him to be ready for the Chicago opener. This may mean he doesn't play in the exhibition games, I don't know.
Another Kocurek pupil that seems to be primed to have a big year is Samson Ekubam. Kocurek basically repeated what Ebukam said recently about his expectations this season. Ekubam played DE in college. At the Rams he was an OLB. He moved back to DE with Niners last year and it took him a while to get the feel for playing DE again. All those who paid attention could see he started to produce more at the end of the season. Kocurek said Ebukam didn't really have much of an offseason last year to learn the position and technique, and Ebukam said it took him a while to learn how to play with a hand down and attack OL from a 3-point stance. They both basically said Ebukam is poised for a big year now that he's comfortable at DE in the Niners' system. The logic is sound.
Nope. Once someone has my trust it takes a lot to lose it because I believe in people who earn it. There are a lot of Niner fans who complain about everything and are chicken littles. I am not one of them. Though I believe Lance will perform well this year, even if he struggles I will not call out the Niners and Kyle Shanahan for drafting him, fully aware he will make the biggest leap in performance from his first year as a starter to his second. But even if he isn't good enough to have warranted trading 3 first round picks to get him, I will always believe that was the right decision. As I said in the Giants thread, I don't get upset and lose trust in people who take big swings and miss when trying to win. I get upset at those who are timid to take big swings toward winning, and the other things they do fail. Big difference.
The Niners have taken several big swings:
- Traded for Garoppolo and signed him to richest QB deal in history after just 6 games playing for them
- Traded for Dee Ford
- Traded DeForrest Buckner for what became Javon Kinlaw, to keep Arik Armstead
- Traded for and signed Trent Williams
- Traded 3 first round picks to get Trey Lance
It's a mixed bag and some decision results are TBD, but the fact is those decisions have already led to leading a Super Bowl and NFC CG in the 4th quarter, and I doubt that would have happened without those go for it moves.
Shanahan is a little too conservative with his game management than I prefer, but his knowledge, leadership, judgement, and transparency are all impressive. I can't not trust people with those traits.
