After about two weeks of following McGovern all over creation I could have told Magruder, Mitchell, Erlichman and Haldeman not to bother with dirty tricks. If they had one tenth of Dick Tuck's élan they could have had fun with it and not do anything stupid (like taping the Oval). And to clinch it McGovern fell for the horseshit when he went to Houston and put out a fire at the Demo Govenors' conference and had to make a deal which meant that the old pros took over (headed by Larry O'Brien) the campaign and optioned the young eager beavers like Kirby Jones to the hinterlands. Took the heart out of the campaign.
My point is that those guys you mention were smart and it was their FULL TIME job. Miller is all about exit velocity. Great story teller and mimic but his play by play suffers for it. Scully learned from the Redhead who was a savant. I think Farhan gets it but he has non-baseball owners and Larry Baer to contend with. Imagine if Bill Veeck had a comparable war chest when he was around.
