Nice to have a Super Bowl quarterback on the roster...at $6.5 million with $500k in roster bonuses.
I wonder how many actual offers the Niners had? I wonder how many GMs are looking at their bottom 1/3rd -rated QB and just kicking themselves over their failure to get a QB with a 4-2 postseason record, who's been in a super bowl and another NFC championship? Who's 33-14 as a starter and is just 30 years old?
Garoppolo's dead money cap hit was $6.5 million anyway. I'll bet he starts the season on the PUP list. And don't forget, a likely compensatory pick if he stays on the SF roster all year.
This wasn't the plan, BTW. They wouldn't have have guaranteed Sudfeld's contract if this was the plan. And the Niners have the best backup in the league.
This is the right choice for Garoppolo's career. He doesn't play for some crappy team and he can rehab for pretty much as long as he wants. He can waive the no-trade clause if he feels like it. And presumably Garoppolo had an attitude adjustment after the loud silence of the QB market weighed in.
And finally...Lance is still their long term preference. Garoppolo is injured roughly half the time. Great / very good when he's in, which isn't often. They'll need Lance.
