Have to disagree Phogge. I think it says nothing about Lance one way or the other. Given that nobody made a great offer (or maybe any offer, who knows?) for JG, this is the best deal the 49ers could get and the best deal JG could get. I suspect the Seattle interest for JG as a free agent turned out to not be as attractive as 6.5M guaranteed money and another bite of the apple next year when JG is at least healthy. Changes little if anything for the team going forward.

I thought he would too. I said I thought Seattle might pay 13 million for him. I still think that. However, I also believe that none of that money would be guaranteed. IMHO nobody would guarantee anything like that amount to a player who was recovering from an injury, had a history of injury, and could turn out to be unable to actually contribute. Do you believe he would get more than 7 million guaranteed money? The 6.5 from the niners is, the rest is performance based.

  To me this says three things:



1.  Lance has not progressed as they hoped.  Because by having JG on the roster, he’s going to be looking over his shoulder.

While it may be true Lance will be looking over his shoulder, it is unclear to me this deal indicates anything about his development. It is a good deal for both the niners and JG independent of Lance. It may be that Lance has not met expectations, but IMHO this deal makes sense either way.

2.  They got no offers for JG.  Not surprising with injury.

3 They know o-line sucks.

How does keeping JG support that narrative? JG is much less mobile than Lance and has a long injury history. If you are looking for either a backup or starting QB to play behind a poor o-line, I would think JG's name would be about the last one you call. He won't last long behind a bad o-line if indeed he ends up playing. What am I missing?
