Have to disagree Phogge. I think it says nothing about Lance one way or the other. Given that nobody made a great offer (or maybe any offer, who knows?) for JG, this is the best deal the 49ers could get and the best deal JG could get. I suspect the Seattle interest for JG as a free agent turned out to not be as attractive as 6.5M guaranteed money and another bite of the apple next year when JG is at least healthy. Changes little if anything for the team going forward.

JG was going to get over 7 million if released.  To me this says three things:

1.  Lance has not progressed as they hoped.  Because by having JG on the roster, he’s going to be looking over his shoulder.  

2.  They got no offers for JG.  Not surprising with injury.

3 They know o-line sucks.

JG would have gotten zero from SF had he been released.  He passed a physical prior to training camp thus nullifying any monies owing from SF.  However, he would have received at least $7 million from another team had he been released by SF and signed elsewhere. 

SF was boxed in because they couldn’t get a draft choice for him and because neither Sudfield or Purdy appear to be viable replacements should Lance get hurt.  

Given the unlikelihood of Lance getting through a full season uninsured given the sieve-like OL, SF had to have a qualified back-up.

Good move by the Niners.

Yes.  Correct on the release. I was wrong. Should have said less than cap hit.

Good move?  Yes and no.  Nice to have a qualified backup.  And the base is less than the cap hit if he was released. But no, cause it’s not so good to have Lance looking over his shoulder.  

Let’s run a scenario.  Niners open with Bears. Let’s say Lance stinks. Bears (with a QB Niners could have probably gotten at 12 - or traded much less to move up a couple spots) beat them in a low scoring game (17-14 for example). Fans will be howling.  Question is how locker room reacts.

Lance has enough pressure.  This, imo, increases it.  

The Niners, imo, have handled this poorly from the ‘2021 draft forward. To make the move they did, they should have been as certain as possible that Lance is going to be a star.  There is no such thing as “can’t miss”.  Elway was about as close as they come. Denver didn’t trade a whole lot more for Elway, than Niners did for Lance.
