The extra scholarship more important to us than the outside possibility Lukrich would have leap-frogged Shield Taylor on the depth chart in order to win 8-12 snaps a game. Lukrich was projecting as a zero to 12 snap a game player for us over the course of his entire career. Now we get an extra scholarship for the next four years. That is helpful to try to instill a competitive walk-on culture by leaving open the possibility for the best walk-on to be converted, as well as to help navigate the off-season scholarship crunch (an extra fifth year player returning, for instance). It's impossible to know now where that edge case will be four months from now but it is highly likely to be more significant than a 0-12 snap player (who given Taylor was much more likely to be on the low end of that spectrum).

How do you know Lukrich was projecting as a zero to 12 snap p/g player over the course of his career? Based on the usage of the FB over the past few seasons? If so, yes, but that has to change. Way too much 10 and 11 personnel for me. Stanford has become less because of it.
I desperately want to see the Fullback position return as a major force for Stanford football. Shaw once said, "We lead the nation in fullbacks." 

Of course, that was during a stretch of very successful football.
