The 2007 turnaround started with a New Slate and Jim Harbaugh from USD, unproven -- but a strong football family, and star QB.

A.  Coach of the year last year was Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, who is a Midwest guy (coached at Ohio State). 
Can't get him -- signed a deal through 2028 now at $5M a year, plus a healthy coaching budget.  Made playoffs last year. 

B.  Why not Dave Clawson at Wake Forest, who has turned the program around, and seems to coach up QBs.  Solid Offense. 
They went 11-3 last year and won the Gator Bowl.  Last weekend they nearly upended Playoff Power Clemson in OT.  
He is on a multi-year contract, but only at $3.6M.  His upside is limited at WF, if he could be leared to the West Coast... 
Clawsom was the ACC Coach of the Year last year.   Go hire proven talent; that is what we do on the Faculty. 
Clawson made a BIG jump on the SI list from #42 to #24 now -- Over D.Shaw, now at #31.

C.  Try to bring back Derek Mason (DefCo 2010-2013), who failed at Vandy, but now is flourishing at OKST... rated #3 DefCo in USA.  
And, he took a salary of $1.1M at OKST after being fired at Vandy.

    1)  Ask him, and let the rumor get out... stir up the landscape.  See if he turns it down (!!) 
    2)  Bring him in as DefCo with a guarantee of the Head Coaching job in 2024.  Shaw gets one year of grace, knowing he's gone.  
          Double his salary as DefCo plus a PA housing allowance.   Shaw hates Defense.  They worked together before. 
          Mason knows the place, and saw glory years with A.Luck., and he became the "Duck Whisperer" for handling Oregon.  
          When Mason steps up to Head Coach, he gets the full package.

 

If Stanford is committed to big-time football Clawson would be my choice. Watched Wake go toe to toe with Clemson this weekend. High octanne offense (Hartman more decisive and more mobile than McKee) but also a defense that shows up and brings it. Plus Clawson is a Williams grad the D-III equivalent of Stanford.
