All of this said, I agree that EJ might not be here next season, especially if Filkins stays healthy and performs well.  The main rationale for staying would be that he'll be a senior and thus very close to his degree.

I don't know what his particular situation is, but given that the athletes spend summers at Stanford it is often true that in 3 years they can get almost enough units to graduate even without taking an extra heavy load. I don't know if/how AP credits play into this situation. If an athlete decides that he may want to go elsewhere, I would expect it would be possible to finish in 3 years. One could get "the 40 year decision" benefit and still transfer.
