It’s the editor’s job to take on an ornery coach or SID if they don’t like the question. The reporters should not be afraid of asking.
Maybe... “Coach, your offense was succeeding against Oregon’s bench. The game was over at halftime realistically. Admission requirements block some players from entrance and block others from working to gain admission. You just said that you’re looking forward to sleeping in your own bed and to next week’s crowd. Have you noticed all the empty seats in the stadium this year and the preponderance of USC fans three weeks ago? So what can you do long term to get back to a competitive level? Please don’t say “execution.”
He’ll probably walk out but the point will have been made. Follow up questions the rest of the season would center on when is a losing program enough for him?
Of course would never happen. But I’d be satisfied if he would just get pissed off. Would show that he has a personality.
I remember some of Mike Leach's answers to tough questions when Wazzu would lose.
One reporter questioned his play calling. His response? "What are you, some kind of idiot or something? Next question."
Another asked him after his nth straight loss to Washington what the excuse was going to be when they lost the next year. "Go back into your cave." was the response.
And there was one where he talked about the players worrying too much about their "fat little girlfriends".
At least that provided some humor.
Not sure if asking Shaw tough questions would help the program much, but it would at least be interesting to hear what he had to say. Probably not too much different than what he is saying already.
