When Wazzu lost to us in 2015 on a botched last-second FG, one reporter justifiably questioned him on his time management and his insistence on passing the ball late in the game when running the ball would have been safer and eaten up more clock. In that particular instance, Wazzu was up 28-27 and had 1st and 10 at their own 45 with 3:51 remaining in the game. A good opportunity to kill some clock. But Leach stuck to his air-raid scheme; and Falk promptly tossed his second INT of the half to Quenton Meeks. Stanford got the go-ahead FG on the ensuing drive, and Wazzu's kicker couldn't connect when time expired. And, yes, that game was the difference between Stanford winning the north and WSU winning the north in 2015.
Leach's answer to the pesky reporter: "What are you, some kind of idiot or something? Next question".
Wazzu ended up in the Alamo Bowl in 2018. The Cougs had the ball late in the game clinging to a two point lead. Leach could have played it conservatively and given the ball back with a minimal amount of time. He had a third and six situation. He decided to throw the ball, completed it for the first down and closed out the game.
Live by the Air Raid; die by the Air Raid.
P.S. Anyone watch the Washington UCLA game Friday night? The Chipster did the same thing. It worked.
P.P.S. We were damn lucky to win that game in 2015. Wazzu's kicker was something like 4 for 4 going into that kick and it was very makeable. Fortunately for us he pushed it to the right.
Yes, we were fortunate to win that one (which, by the way, was our last win to-date against the Cougars). That game was Stanford's first encounter with Grinch's speed D; and it stymied McCaffrey. Hogan started running the ball, which got us back in the game. Still, defeat seemed near certain when Wazzu's FG-kicking team took the field with only seconds left. In retrospect, the 2015 season now appears to be the absolute peak of Stanford football in this millennium. But if that Wazzu kicker had connected and the rest of the season had played out the way it did (including our loss at home to Oregon later that season), either the Trojans or the Cougs would have played Iowa in the Rose Bowl; and with three losses, we probably would not have cracked the top ten in the final rankings.
