In the meantime, count me as a proponent of the Lance trade.

From the day it happened I thought the Lance trade was the right move to make for Niners. I still do. But the team totally botched Lance's development. OK to sit him during rookie year, but to have him #1 in OTAs and all through training camp, then use him in a high risk way that threw away the season for him, was malpractice. Does anyone think Shanahan would have called so many runs for Lance if Sudfeld was the backup?

The same people who were raving about signing Garoppolo as a backup to Lance should be pointing out the vulnerability of having Purdy as a backup now, but I haven't heard it. Of course, given the way the world works, we'll certainly hear this from the reactionaries if Garoppolo does go down.

As for Garoppolo, he does win. He does put up pretty good stats relative to the NFL. The problem is he has proven he's just not as good as he must be to win the biggest of games throwing the ball when absolutely needed in playoffs. To me, the most important game on the schedule for the Niners this year is Week 7 when they host the Chiefs (a game I happen to be attending as luck would have it). If Garoppolo, backed by a great Niners defense, can come out on top vs. Mahomes, I'll be more sanguine about Garoppolo having potential to be a Super Bowl winning QB.

But what are the odds Garoppolo even starts and it isn't Purdy in that game?  We all know the injury history and now the Niners are playing with #3 LT.

Trey Lance was selected in part for his ability to run. If they were not going to tap into that, they could have stayed at 12 (or maybe gave up less to move up a couple spots) and picked Jones.  Who, btw, is hurt.  Another “high risk” play no doubt.  

“High risk” plays occur constantly. It’s football. QBs that are good runners add a ton to a defenses problems. So, it was neither surprising nor “wrong” that Shanahan had some designed runs.  Unfortunately, Lance got hurt. It happens.

As for pointing to the vulnerability if JG goes down; everyone knows that. But tell us - who is out there they should pick up?  There is a dearth of quality QBs at first and second team level.  Not as if there is a big selection out there. Bottom line - if you are left with your 3d string QB starting over an extended period you are in deep trouble. (Maybe they could coax Ryan Fitzpatrick out of retirement…..)
