Love or hate Shaw, it’s hard to argue he was the wrong hire. He has led us to more success then the next 2 or 3 head coaches combined. Yes he built upon what Harbaugh started. But that was far from inevitable. 

Now whether to keep him now is an entirely different matter. I’d give him the ultimatum of cleaning house with the staff and taking more of a program manager role or moving on, though in practice I think he gets one more year.

The Athletic has grouped college coaches into Tiers.  Coaches of possible interest are:

Tier 1A has only one coach listed which is Saben
Tier 1B:
   Harbaugh/Michigan
   Whittingham/Utah
Tier 2:
   Chryst/Wisconsin
   Ferentz/Iowa
   Fitzgerald/Northwestern
   Shaw/Stanford
The four coaches in Tier 2 are mentioned in the same paragraph as having created a comfort zone against being fired due to their earlier successes and the fact that they are alumni of their respective schools with the exception of Ferentz, though the article does mention that since Chryst was fired there may be a greater willingness to let any of these coaches go.  It is mentioned that Stanford in underperforming based upon the talent they have had on their roster during the last few years.
