The problem is us.  I mean, I was one of the empty seats at the Stadium on Saturday, and I would venture that many of the people on this thread aghast at the lack of attendance were too.

When I was a freshman in 1977 I had a friend who smuggled booze into the stadium in ziplock bags under his hat.  So the ban must have been pre 1977.

The problem is not us. The problem is that Stanford as a whole is not putting a compelling offering out there for consumers to enjoy. The school, the athletic department, and the team are all complicit in diminishing what was once a worthwhile experience.

It all went downhill after they banned beer from the stadium.

When was that? It was gradual, right? I remember they instituted the "six pack ban" in 1987 (couldn't bring in more than a six pack and you had to be over 21). When did the stadium go booze-free? 1990?

Someone with a better memory should take that one.  My freshman year, fall of '66, frats were bringing kegs into the student section, which was basically anywhere on the sunny side where you could stake out some seats.  But next year was the Summer of Love and as a dutiful participant in the 60's, I don't remember anything after that until Plunkett hit Bob Moore in the end zone in front of us at the Rose Bowl, LOL.
