They didn’t play that poorly vs SDSU. They shot poorly. There’s a difference.
Last time I checked, shooting is a big part of playing. On top of that they had 17 turnovers with 10 assists, were <70% on free throws, and SDSU shot 51% FG.

Quality of opponent makes a big difference
Shooting is, of course, part of “playing”. Having said that, it’s also one of the least controllable things especially from the coaches perspective.
San Diego State had significantly more talent – especially related to quickness. Stanford played hard, they outrebound them, and they essentially stayed in a game when they shot 37% from the field, missing a lot of good looks.
I don’t know if it was a bad night or if it’s simply a bad shooting team. If it’s the latter, it’ll be a long year. They simply don’t have enough athleticism to make up for that.
