Stanford will probably have to pay the going rate for a top coach.
We are moving into a bifurcated world, where coaches in the SEC and Big Ten (including USC now) will have brobdingnagian contracts, while coaches in other conferences will have large but more modest contracts. Shaw was the best paid coach in the PAC-12 before Lincoln Reily. Recent coaching hires in the PAC-12 include Oregon ($29 million for six years: https://www.athleticbusiness.com/operati...ball-coach) and Washington (who just extended DeBoer to $27 million over six years).
