I understand why people have qualms about the professionalization of college athletics.  I don't like it at all.  But I don't want us to drop out as a power conference contender in any sport.  It's one of the things that makes Stanford, Stanford.  One of my jokes, is that Harvard and MIT could merge, we would still kick their ass in football.

If Stanford wants to field a competitive program, it will have to adapt to the new professional realities of college football.  We do have certain advantages should we decide to deploy them.  For example, to embrace transfer portal perhaps the University could offer a co-terminal bachelor's program for good student-athletes transferring from other programs.  Expecting more than one or two to come for a Master's is not realistic.  

The Stanford brand carries value.  This is why there were reports that the value of our media rights exceeded Oregon's.  Allowing the judicious juxtaposition of the Stanford brand could boost the value of NIL deals.
