Notes on Mendenhall from my brother (UVA grad).

Great coach. Super idiosyncratic. Not very dynamic or personable. His style doesn't play well in the NIL era. A good fit at a tier 2 school like BYU (Mendenhall is Mormon).

Inherited a car crash at UVA. Took the team as far as he could. First 2 years were rough. Then 4 consecutive winning records but did not compete for league titles.

Doesn't recruit all that well. Recruits for character. The 3 kids who were shot were his (but so was the shooter).

Would agree with most of that assessment, though to be slightly pedantic, he did quite literally compete for an ACC title in 2019 during UVa's Orange Bowl run, but ran into the brick wall that is (was?) the Clemson machine in the ACC championship.
