• I love 'OutsiderFan's posts about Stanford Football, & often find myself being absolutely grateful for his 'refreshingly innovative posts about Stanford Football' & I often find myself subvocalizing 'Yeah, that's what Im talking about !' after reading some of  OutsiderFan's posts about Stanford Football.

Really? I haven't been posting much about Stanford Football lately. Anyway, glad I'm not just "yelling at clouds" as the meme goes!

• I am sure BostonCard will find some subset/cube of empirical longitudinal data to refute the hypotheses & cause and effect conclusions I infer & draw, but that is welcome as well.

I've seen more names bandied about for this Stanford job in the last couple days than I think I ever remember seeing any time the job was open before. This might be the biggest name hire Stanford has ever made for any coach ever. Dennis Green was a known name.  Tyrone Willingham really wasn't.  Buddy Teevens was not really well known, but he did come from a wildly successful Florda offense that Stanford didn't have the personnel to run. Walt Harris is probably the biggest name Head Coach Stanford has made to date. Jim Harbaugh was the biggest name in terms of recognition, but was not established as a top Head Coach yet.

I continue to believe that if you remove your all-time winningest coach, you don't hire an unknown person to replace them.  

As an outsider, I think the most important things Stanford needs in a Head Football Coach, in no particular order after #1:

1. Can make Stanford's higher standards a positive in recruiting
2. Is innovative; wants to push envelope everywhere (and I mean everywhere) in the program and on the field
3. Has integrity (an offer is an offer, won't negatively recruit)
4. Has an eye for talent, puts a premium on player development*
5. Will hold everyone accountable to a standard of performance
6. Is a great recruiter and salesman of the program to media, fans, alumni (puts butts in seats)

Notice I do not put a high priority on Xs and O's in the Head Coach. It's really more about having a plan, unimpeachable program values, developing culture, hiring the right people to execute, giving them what is needed to succeed on all fronts, and getting out of their way.

Basically, I think Stanford needs more of a CEO Head Coach than a coordinator with Head Coach responsibilities.
