Playing around with blots like this is very shady, and does not seem excusable as something so simple as making the picture look nice.
Stanford needs to do a real actual investigation, and probably MTL needs to go. If this was one or two middle author papers, that's one thing. Would be easy to miss an intentional or unintentional manipulation of a figure. But this is a lot of papers and includes ones where he is the lead author! Inexcusable.
