It might not say anything about Stanford if Petersen declines. He is on downslope of his career, with plenty of money and an easy job that pays well. The best program in the country might not have any appeal to him.
And BTW I think Petersen would be a risky hire for the above reasons. Does he have the fire and motivation to be successful at a tough job?
