I don't think it says anything about the University of Washington that Petersen stepped down from coaching there, so I don't think it would say much about Stanford if he didn't take the job.  In fact, given his stated reasons for leaving UW, I think it might say more about Stanford if he were offered and took the position: that it is a cushy, low-pressure job where you can just coast.
