The fact that the most noise we have heard has come from the Roman camp tells me he is probably not “plan A”.  From my perspective, his positives:

Would bring back intellectual brutality, but with experience to show the benefits of a mobile QB.
Experience in the NFL can sell well to recruits.
Knows Stanford, so less of a learning curve with admissions and such.
Experience with Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh

The minuses:
No head coaching experience
Despite being qualified, has never gotten a head coaching job; why not?
Harbaugh’s coaching tree has been somewhat unsuccessful; Shaw is the most successful branch of that tree, and just got pruned
