Like I have droned on about for years in response to the "Giants finished second" for X free agent they were bidding to sign, you finish first by offering more in most circumstances. If Stanford wants Dave Aranda, they pay what it takes to get him, which would mean giving him what they were paying Shaw.

If you are serious, you are paying your Head Coach at least $5 million/year.

That $5 million is not the going rate for a coach one really believes will be a top 30 level coach.    That would have been a decent contract in 2020 or 2021, but recently contracts seem to be adding in expectations on CFP12 and the next round of TV contracts (for the SEC and BigTen).

Mel Tucker, Michigan State's coach, got a lucrative extension midseason even with his mediocre results to date.
Same for Kiffin with his mediocre results at Ole Miss.
Deion, who will get loads from outside endorsements, has a new contract with Colorado giving him $6 million per year even though he has never coached in the FBS level before.

A decent coach with experience looking at the upcoming CFP 12 and TV deals would likely want a 5 year deal at Deion's range given the real hurdles to immediate success at Stanford and the limited likelihood of promotional deals while coaching games in the grave yard shift.

A program like Stanford could offer less, but that would all but guarantee the coach would leave for a more lucrative conference, with fewer impediments to coaching success, after any level of success in year 2 of that budget oriented contract.

I am not sure a coach from the outside will stay at Stanford after their first 7-5 type season, so potentially just bouncing in the value coach market every few years will be the plan.

If value is the theme, then Stanford's next coach could/should be one of the many NFL African-American coaches that always seem to be overlooked by NFL owners.
