I don’t envy MLB GMs. The new generation of GMs, like ours, were raised in the moneyball era, to find value in undervalued players.
The vast majority of these massive contracts will not be good values and underperform. That said, you can’t take money with you and while you need to build through draft and develop, no team is good enough to win with that without supplementing with free agents. The best teams do both, draft, develop, and hold your nose and overpay for talent that will likely underperform. The key is to identify the right talent, and that’s a bit of a crapshoot to find who ages better and who gets hurt.
