He had allies of his telling the world how wonderful he was and he let himself be seen publicly at Stanford. He also lost out publicly for the Duke job in a similar fashion. Suggests either he misjudged his chances or was led in the wrong direction. Stanford being Penny wise pound foolish is certainly possible (indeed, given what we know about the institution, reasonably likely), but it’s also possible that Garrett misjudged things or botched the interviews. Again, it seems to have happened to him last year, too, which makes me wonder if Stanford screwed up or if Garrett screwed up.
I would add Garrett’s statement was fine, and he probably had to put out something after letting it be so public.
