I don’t have any strong opinion on whether MTL committed any misconduct or should step down here, but I’ll note that temporary suspension with pay is a widely accepted practice when an employee is accused of misconduct. Presumption of innocence of course applies in criminal cases. The employer still has a burden in connection with a for cause termination (though it’s a lower burden). The recommended remedy here is less severe still.
