Brock Purdy is demonstrating the "conventional wisdom" applied to him does not apply.
We are conditioned to hearing teammates bloviate and heap hyperbolic praise on each other, so when Fred Warner said he had full confidence in Brock Purdy and nothing he does in games surprises him, many might have thought Warner was just pumping the guy up when he isn't that good. But sometimes players speak truth. Warner actually did and does have great confidence in Purdy in large part because he held his own against the #1 Defense in the NFL. Purdy has essentially started three games and has proven he is a bigger play maker than Garoppolo over that time.
He's beat O blitzes. He's beat zone blitzes. He's beat 3-man rush zone coverage. Will he beat every defense he faces? Remains to be seen. But what doesn't remain to be seen is if Purdy is as good as Garoppolo. If there was sentiment that the Niners were Super Bowl contenders with Garoppolo, they absolutely are with Purdy. I didn't buy the Niners being a Super Bowl contender with Garoppolo. To me, he's just too damn limited. But I do think the Niners can win the Super Bowl with Purdy.
The Niners don't need All-Pro level QB play to win given how dominant the Defense is, the run game, CMac, etc. They just need solid QB play, and maybe someone who can make a few plays out of nothing. This is Brock Purdy. Most impressively, he shows not even a hint that the stage and moment is too big for him. He has supreme confidence and he is not surprised by what he has done. He expects it.
It remains to be seen if Purdy can lead the team from behind on a must-score drive, but short of that, I see no reason to doubt him and his ability to get the Niners further than they would get with Garoppolo.
