And the parents who went to jail to get their kids into U$C?  I might argue their kids got negative value from the parents’ criminal activity and that the kids would’ve been better off at a Cal State school.

At least one of these cases is under appeal. Three main arguments against conviction:

1) It can't be conspiracy if the alleged conspirators literally don't know each other.
2) Can't be conspiracy if they are competing for the same admissions spots.
3) (my favorite) -- USC already sells admissions spots. Why should this be any different?
