Brock Purdy is not the type to be overwhelmed by whatever people call "pressure." He couldn't have possibly done what he has as a rookie NFL QB if he was. The playoffs may be more intense, but it's not like the defenses he has faced to date weren't throwing everything they had at him, and he's all of a sudden not going to be able to deal with what he sees in the playoffs. In fact, this is what he has demonstrated that most rookies struggle with - he sees things very well, trusts his eyes (based on a lot of experience), and makes sound, decisive decisions. Add to this his ability to maneuver to avoid pressure, find throwing lanes and open receivers, then deliver balls with accuracy, and you have, well, a very good QB, regardless of how much NFL experience he has. Nothing demonstrates his mental acuity more than the fact George Kittle had 7 TD catches in 6 games with Purdy and 4 in 10 games with Garoppolo.
Purdy won on the road at Seattle to clinch the division. He led the Niners from 10 points down to beat the Raiders in the second half on the road. He has otherwise been so efficient, the other games he has played in haven't been close. His team is averaging 33.5 PPG with him at QB.
Purdy has the aforementioned highest passer rating in the NFL since he replaced Garoppolo, but that doesn't happen in a vacuum. Name a rookie NFL QB who has had a better situation to be in than Brock Purdy. He has arguably the most talented roster in the NFL around him, and almost certainly the most talent any starting rookie QB has ever had around him. He has one of the great offensive minds and play callers guiding him. And then, he himself has been forged with experience, work ethic, level of focus and maturity uncommon for NFL rookies, let alone QBs.
So ya, Purdy is a rookie NFL QB. He also isn't.
“One of the great offensive minds and play callers guiding him.” Did McDaniel come back? I thought he was the true brains behind Shanahan.
Playoffs are a different animal. I suspect Purdy will do fine. Although it’s going to be a mess Saturday. We will soon see…..
