I wonder who owns this scientific breakthrough.  Stanford?  It must be worth billions.  Maybe this can help with the athletic department deficit, better student housing, and a makeover for Lake Lag.

Stanford owns the IP, though often the professors/grad students will start a company to commercialize the invention and will license it from the school fairly cheaply.  Example, Googles search algorithm was developed at Stanford by Larry Page and Sergei Brin and Stanford held the patent, which it licensed to Google, confounded by Brin and Page.

In fiscal year 2022, Stanford received $89 million in licensing revenue from 1,099 technologies.

At its height, Stanford owned some very lucrative patents and was bringing in much more money.
