In many ways, they are totally different games. A few coaches succeed at both, but many of the “best” college coaches failed miserably in the nfl because they may have great ability at certain things that just don’t matter in the nfl — like being a great fundraiser, convincing the administration of resources you need, convincing high school kids to come to your school, etc.
Conversely, Coach Shaw’s well-known acumen evaluating nfl talent isn’t something that necessarily helped in college. And his calm demeanor may hurt the energy level and motivation of kids, but it could help older, multimillionaire professionals play their best.
And last, there just aren’t enough coaches with a high possible ceiling. It’s worth taking a gamble on an unknown with an unknown ceiling in the nfl than a known coach with a known, limiting ceiling. In the nfl, what’s the worst that could happen? You’re not necessarily stuck with multiyear contract penalties like in college. All your guys can’t transfer out like in college. Why not take a gamble? Again, it is a very, very different game.
I find many of the comments hurled at David Shaw to be mean-spirited, unjustified and frankly not based on the facts when it comes to the differences between college and pro football.
+1. I think he'd do well at the NFL level.
