Best of luck to Mr. Butler- hopefully he can make an impact, possibly as a short yardage back? His frame (5'11, 225) seems to suggest he could bring some depth and much needed physicality we haven't had in the backfield since Scarlett graduated.

That said, this continues a worrisome early trend of the new staff bringing in transfers who don't seem to have the talent profile we would hope for to compete at a conference-contender or even bowl-team type level. 

Anyone have any insights on how the changes with the transfer process are proceeding with the administration (I know it's still early days post-Shaw), and whether we can expect the staff to offer some of the remaining P5 or G5 transfer talent still out there for next season?

I did a cursory search in the transfer portal and a few guys came up who seemed like they could potentially fit our profile based on performance and academics. Most of these are probably pipe dreams/probably have no interest:

- Donald Willis, LB, Minnesota (All-Academic Big Ten; was expected to start for them next year)
- Kobe Wilson, LB, Temple (Named to the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Award Roster for a minimum 3.5 GPA and service in the community; had 64 tackles last year)
- Ashanti Cistrunk, LB, Ole Miss (Athletic Director's Honor Roll; 72 tackles)
- Gary Bryant, Jr., WR, USC (big-time talent we offered out of HS; 44 catches in 2021)
- Michael Drennen, RB, Kentucky (4-star we offered out of HS)
- Ishmael Ibraheem, CB, Texas (Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll; 4-star recruit)
- Josh Moten, DB, Texas A&M (Earned team's Academic Excellence Award; 4-star recruit)
- Tyrin Woodby, CB, West Virginia (Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll)
- Jalani Williams, DB, Missouri (SEC Academic Honor Roll)

I did this kind of search a few years ago when Stanford had more of a football reputation and the Pac-12 still was considered to be on par, or close to on par with the B1G, ACC, and Big-12.  Not one of the players I flagged transferred to Stanford.  I don't think it's just an issue of Stanford being in a difficult spot football-wise.  Instead, I think it's a combination of: (1) very long odds for Stanford transfer applicants generally, and even for football players; and (2) lack of public information about which schools a player is considering even if he's in general open to the possibility of a transfer.  Things may have changed as the transfer portal has become a more essential part of recruiting.  I'm just giving my experience.  Mileage will vary.
