I agree with 81Alum: that both universities and athletes should be held responsible for their commitments to a contract. A coach has to take the long view when she offers a contract to a player — that’s what it takes to build a team. Players are basically given a promise of a four-year contract with no commitment in return. A player should be required to make a similar commitment to the school, with certain reasonable exceptions.
We seem to be living in a wide open system, much like the old west, without a set of appropriate rules. This will change, the pendulum shift that currently favors the player will surely go through a necessary correction in the next year or two.
