The SEC has outshown all other conferences by far and was clearly underseeded in the tournament. Not only 7 wins, but 2 upsets (an 11 seed and a 10 seed). (Let's hope they are done with the upsets!) Their only loss was 10-seed Alabama's 4 point loss to Baylor. I don't understand why the committee gave the 4th best team in the SEC (Ole Miss) an 8-seed, but hopefully we'll still take care of business today. Today's game vs Ole Miss is more like a Sweet 16 matchup, but with home court advantage.
The Big 10 and the Pac 12 have performed about the same but neither has really proved anything yet. If seeds hold the Big 10 will have 4 teams in the Sweet 16 and the Pac 12 will have 3 (I'm really hoping for 4).
The ACC has been okay. 6 wins plus they did get one upset (but it was a 9 over an 8, while they had two 7 seeds lose).
The Big 12 has 3 teams left but only 1 (Texas) is favored in round 2.
The Big East is down to UConn and Villanova. Villanova gets quirky FGCU in round 2, so who knows how that matchup will end up.
Notably, there were four conferences where the regular season champ didn't win the conference tournament. Big 12 Tournament Champ Iowa State and Pac 12 Tournament Champ Washington State were both upset in the 1st round this year. Virginia Tech and Iowa are the other two conference tournament champs that didn't win their conference. Will either make the Elite 8? (History does not bode well for surprise conference tournament champions. Last season Kentucky lost in the 1st round and Iowa lost in the 2nd.)
