Other than playing well for most of the game against South Carolina (before collapsing at the end and wilting in OT), it was fairly clear that Stanford was very iffy/dicey against athletic teams that pressed us tightly. We ran into a good one tonight, Tara predictably had zero answers, and Jones and Brink alone could not get the job done in another imbalanced offensive display. Old Miss's pressing D and our turnovers did us in. Too bad for the seniors. Lot of talent but not well coached IMO. How many times does Stanford have to blow it in the crunch before it is acknowledged that the coaching is inconsistent and lackluster?

Of course, this is exactly the kind of complaining that was happening when Monty’s team went up to Seattle and lost to Alabama. We all know how things have gone since then. Watching the men’s team fall into irrelevance is helpful perspective to not take for granted that we cheer for a great program that wins and wins. So great that going out in the second round seems like a disaster. Quick quiz: when’s the last time the men’s team got to the second round? Not going to complain about the coaching. I can see how we tried to beat the pressure, but it’s up to the players to finish. The difference between winning and losing wasn’t the game plan tonight, it was the missed layups, a couple of dumb turnovers, and a few missed free throws. Sure, there are some things to fix, and in a perfect universe, we’d recruit a couple of checking line players to stop the really overly aggressive hacking style defense, and we’d find a couple of guards who can really put the ball on the floor when they’re getting pushed around. If there was a game that highlighted how much we missed Lexie and Lacie, this was it.

So sad to see the funky four go out like this. Jump ends with 100 3’s. I hope she comes back. I think I’ll never see a player like Haley Jones in a Stanford uniform again. It’s been a treat to watch her.
