Giants OF situation is bleak. At least until Haniger and Slater are  ready. Until then, I suspect Pederson or Sabol will be in LF vs RH pitching. Johnson (switch hitter) should play vs lefties in CF.  He can be a defensive replacement as well. And PR.  Piscotty may help at some point.  But he is hurt presently. 

Getting 120-130 games from Haniger is key.  Ditto Conforto.  Yaz is a big question.  As a platoon player can he slash .225/325/400/725 with 12-15 HRs?  That and good defense is about what we can hope for, I think.  His playing days vs lefties are, I think, generally over.

Lotta talk about “piggy-backing” Manaea with another starter - either Stripling or DeSclafani.  I dislike the idea.

One change for me…. Hjelle in, DeSclafani on IL to begin season.  
Until Haniger returns, we can only hope that no opponent hits the ball to left field.

I said 80 earlier this month.  Drop me down to 76.  Things are looking more grim by the day…..

Hjelle for DeSclafani a possibility.  But the Giants will have to create the injury. DeScalafani has looked pretty healthy.  Course, wouldn’t be the first time. 

Hjelle will get a lot of work in SF this year.  But my guess is he will be on the shuttle.  Can ride that 5 times…..

What could have been: I was just thinking about Bruce Bochy's son, Brett. Saw him pitch a few times. He didn't pitch much in the bigs, just 6 1/3rd innings over parts of two MLB seasons. But he had a career MLB 2.84 ERA with a 0.789 WHIP. He had a 3.02 ERA in the minors with a 20-9 record. Had a 4.22 ERA and an 11-6 record in three seasons in the hitter friendly PCL. He went 6-1 with a 2.95 ERA in Sacramento.

I realize he most likely wasn't going to set the world on fire.  At the same time, his career MLB ERA would have been fifth best out of 21 pitchers on the 2015 Giants.

So why retire?

 He retired because he was never going to be an MLB pitcher. Didn’t have major league stuff.
