Gary Sanchez signed to a minor league deal with an opt-out date of May 1.  The Giants catching corps will be under the microscope in April.  

Apropos of nothing…. 21 out of 22 base stealing attempts were successful on Opening Day (only Toronto’s Matt Chapman was unsuccessful).  Does it really matter who is catching?  With the new rules in place, you probably won’t stop the opposition from stealing second anyway…..

They will look to trade Bart if Sánchez gets ready

I thought Joey Bart's days were numbered on the day they drafted Patrick Bailey.

Catchers are always hard to find. Plus Bailey is a switch hitter who is significantly stronger hitting from the left side. So there was/is always possibility of a platoon. Unfortunately, Bailey hasn’t developed as well as theyd like to this point. Although much of that is that he has been absolutely awful hitting right handed. To the point where I hope they just end his switch-hitting. (Interestingly, my understanding is the right side is his natural side). The Giants did that with JT Snow and it made a difference. 

I don’t think the Giants have handled Bart very well. My guess is that if Sanchez shows that he’s ready he’ll take over the starting catching chores with Perez backing him up. 60-40 if you will. Bart has an option left so they can send him down. But at that point, I think his Giants career is essentially done.

I would really have liked to see Johnson, and other homegrown Giants.

Back in the day the Giants would occasionally see Les Johnson late in spring training games that Kruk and Kuip  were announcing…..
