Betts is the larger concern but Tara and Stanford have been too slow to adapt to the changing landscape until well, yesterday’s fundraiser. Hopefully they have learned their lesson and next season will be more successful and lucrative for WBB players. And hopefully Tara will release control of the team and substitution decisions which she is not good at managing. She needs to move to a paint by numbers system where talented players are getting predictable minutes. You don’t develop sitting on the bench. Either way, having the #1 player leave your program is bad publicity but may be in Betts financial interest. I’d never fault a player that is simply exercising the free market that coaches have had all along.
Adapt or retire and bring in Becky Hammon.
I suspect the hastily organized banquet was in part the result of known imminent transfer portal activity, and probably explains the muted mood (losing early in both the Pac-12 and NCAA tournaments didn't help either).
I really love Tara, and respect her so much, but I wonder if now is time to consider enjoying more time in her cabin upstate? I don't see her adapting to the new reality, and while I'd take her reality over the new one 11 times out of 10, we are where we are.
One other thought: I wonder if "Stanford hates fun" has hurt our recruiting (and retention) prospects? It sure seems like campus life is a lot less fun than "in my day" 20 years ago.
Final coda: thank goodness for the Hulls. I don't think you're going to see the kind of quiet, grinding jack-of-all-trades all-stars as much in this new landscape of bravado, fake lashes, Twitter call outs, and taunting.
Seriously wondering if it's time for me to find a new sport to get excited about. Any suggestions?
