Undisputed that MTL coauthored several papers with fabricated data. It's possible, even likely that this was more due to failure to mentor/supervise versus MTL fabricating the data themselves.
But it's not "mob mentality" to want your university president to be above reproach. There are many people who could do the job just fine, he is not owed anything by Stanford or Stanford alums.
He frankly could be fired for performance irrespective of this issue. Stanford has been stepping on rakes for the last couple years. Buck stops somewhere right?
