That’s Matos AAA slash line. But it only tells part of the story. He has 47 PA’s and has struck out twice. Impressive to say the least. Other side of the equation is the power isn’t there. Yet. He’s 21 with obviously elite contact skills. He should get stronger as he matures physically.
I don’t expect the Giants to tinker much with his swing. The contact plays. Zaidi has made it very clear that the Giants do not employ a “one-size-fits-all“ philosophy throughout the system. Something I was very happy to read.
Matos can be a high average/ high OBP hitter with well above average speed and outfield skills. That’s a very valuable player. If he adds power that’s an all star. The power I think will come naturally. Question is, will we see him this year in San Francisco. I think so. I’m betting around July.
Talk is about Schmitt and Bailey. Understandably. But this streak is mostly about pitching. 4 or less runs in last 13 games. That’s giving you a good chance to win every time out. Bullpen has been terrific. Awful April. Great May. Kapler has pushed the right buttons.
I read an article somewhere, talked about the pen, said it simply took them a while to get used to how they were being used. Not a knock – the article just focused on how pitchers generally like routines, etc. So it took them a while to settle in with not being slotted, etc. Once they got past that, they’ve been sailing.
Manaea’s last two outings have been hopeful. My preference is to have him back in the rotation because he is a guy that can get deep in the games. But perhaps he is best suited to do what he’s doing right now at this point in his career. I hate the bullpen games – largely for aesthetic reasons – but maybe they keep doing one of those every five games. They can do that when they get seven innings consistently from Webb and at least six consistently from Cobb and DeSclafani. Also, Wood usually gives them 5.
What they need to avoid is the stretch where the starters are not giving innings. That’s when your bullpen gets beat up. Avoiding that is, to me, crucial. They’ve been able to do that quite well this month.
