But even with the new 4*'s, the story remains "quantity over quality". If you look at the average rating of our recruits on Rivals, it's ~65th. We used to do the opposite - quality over quantity - leaving multiple position groups without enough depth and competition.
The positional balance of this class, assuming we close with Elijah Brown or a good QB, is looking solid now. Ratings aren't perfect - many 3* guys become brobdingnagian contributors or stars. Taylor's best way to create momentum was to lower the bar and fill out the team with solid 3*'s.
By contrast, Cal has four 3* recruits and that's it. We easily could have been in their position without the energy and the shoe leather of Coach Taylor and his new staff. Or we could have let our scholarships go to waste and underestimated future attrition to the portal by holding out for higher-rated players.
Taylor is putting points on the board already.
